Love is a crazy thing and so is timing.
Before I go into our story I'll give you a little of the person my fiance is. He is like the picture perfect teddy bear Polynesian. He gives lots of good hugs and is pretty much ready to be everybody's friend. He is the first to offer to help someone or give someone something if they have less than he does. He loves food and used to play football for SUU. He is easy to love and loves easily... but not quickly hehe.
I met Noa in the cafeteria at SUU, the school that we go to. I was eating lunch with one of my teammates who is Polynesian. Noa's boss makes them do what they call "3-a-days." They are required to meet three new people every day. I was one of those people. He sat with us and talked while we finished eating.
After we were done eating... we didn't actually talk again. Noa says he knew who I was after but didn't know if he could say hi.
About two months later Noa came and said hi while I was eating lunch again (lol) with some other friends during finals weeks. We talked again and we found out that both of us would be back early for school next year. I would be back for volleyball summer training and he would be back for work. He told me to hit him up for game nights or anything.... So as soon as I got back that is exactly what I did.
My roommate wanted to have a game night an I just wanted people over at the house. I messaged Noa on Facebook and he gave me his number. We texted a little and said he would come. He showed up with like 12 friends and made the game night actually fun. Crazy thing is we didn't really talk because I was doing chemistry homework the whole night. After everyone left though I didn't really think anything of Noa more than just being friends.
I kept doing my summer chemistry course and training when one day I got a text from Noa with a picture of the volleyball poster (that I was on this year) with some comment about me flexing. I had broken my toe that day and he used it as an excuse to text me every day for the next week almost. He says he was not trying to flirt at all, just being himself. I always think that is a lie, but I guess I will never know for sure.
One day while we were texting I went through the McDonald's drive-through and saw some of Noa's friends in the restaurant so I sent him a message. He told me he was in there with them and told me to come in. I told him I wouldn't because I was in my pajamas, no bra, and no makeup. He and his friends had gone repelling with his coworkers. We kept texting and it lead to his asking me out (over text, that pansy). I said yes.
For our first date Noa came to pick me up an hour late (*rolls eyes*). He told me first but still... its a first date, come on. We went to Hermies, a little burger joint here in Cedar City, Utah then we went to the park that is right next to it and talked for a while. As I am sitting and thinking about this now, this date could have been so awkward. It never was though. We never seemed to run out of things to talk about. During our first date Noa asked me if he could get a second date, and I said yes without a second date.
We actually saw each other in person or FaceTimed every day after that. We only FaceTimed when I was traveling for volleyball or we were apart because of holidays. We would go to different game nights, we went hiking with is friends, we went to some movies. We did all kinds of things and he never kissed me.
We were seeing each other every day, but this wimp did not kiss me for a whole month. A month. Then after he kissed me, it took him another week to kiss me again. I was very patient haha. He had told me about his old relationships and stuff so I was trying to give him all the time he needed. When he kissed me the second time he asked me to be his girlfriend and things moved pretty quickly after that.
We said I Love You about a month after we became "official" and started talking about marriage about a month after that. When you look back that sounds fast but every step of the way I was sure.
We got engaged December 6th, 2019. We had been dating for about five months from our first date. We are getting married in two days! April 18th. Its been just over four months since we got engaged.
Some of the things I have realized is that it really isn't about the time you spent dating. I realized I loved Noa as I got to see him serve me and other people. I realized I loved him when helped me through my hard times not by fixing my problems, but by listening to me and encouraging me through it. I knew I wanted him forever through the little things and our time together. I saw him as a dad to our kids one day as I watched him cook some of his favorite foods. I saw him as someone I could love forever when he was so nervous the night he asked me to marry him and he had snuck my family down to be there.
I love our story because its funny but also because it will always be ours.
