Every girl dreams of her wedding day, dressed in white, feeling like a princess... What happens when that feeling isn't there?
My Experience
I remember being home with my sisters over summer breaks, camped on the couch watching TLC's "Say Yes to the Dress" and "Four Weddings" for hours on end. We would critique the choices of each bride, and dream of getting to try our own dress on someday.
When the time came, the experience was a little different. I didn't try on hundreds of dresses and have budget of a couple thousand dollars. I didn't cry happy tears when I found "The One."
At the time, I felt like something was wrong with me -- like I wasn't fit to be a bride if I didn't get these feelings. I only went to two stores. It took me maybe four
hours before I decided on a dress. I was discouraged half the time I was shopping because my athlete body didn't fit in the usual dresses for people my dress size.
It took me a little to realize that process was a little different. Maybe I didn't start crying the moment they put me in a veil.
I did know, without a doubt, that I was excited to wear my dress on the day I would marry the man I love.
Don't let the stereotypes or what you see on TV dictate how you think you should feel. Your journey and wedding should be individual to you.
How to Ensure Success in Wedding Dress Shopping
1: Have an Established Budget
Some dress shops won't let you schedule an appointment without having a set budget, so this is something that needs to be done early in the planning process.
On TV shows, it seems like its okay to blow the budget for something you really want. Prioritize a dress while making your original budget, then stick to your guns.
2: Do Your Research, but be Open Minded
It is helpful to go into an appointment with an idea of what you want. Use sights like Instagram or Pinterest to get inspiration. Be conscious of what you're drawn to, and don't be afraid to contact who posted the content to find out if it could be right for you. If it helps, take notes.
When you actually get to your appointment, don't fret if the stylist pulls something outside of what you asked for. Sometimes what looks pretty in pictures isn't what is right when its put on you.
3: Don't Be Afraid of Saying Yes to the First Dress
Just because its the first, doesn't mean it is wrong. You are totally justified in trying on other dresses, but if your heart if calling for one don't deny yourself of the joy it brought you.
People say "when you know, you know," talking about significant others. It is okay to apply this to the dress you like.
4: If You Don't Cry Tears of Joy, its Okay
If you get any moral from my story, its that whatever reaction you get is perfect!
Make it a fun time, don't worry about what is expected, and get the dress you want.
